A Brief Introduction to Venerable Master Yin Shun
印顺大和尚,佛门泰斗本焕长老之衣钵真传,临济宗第四十五代传人。现任全国政协委员、中国佛教协会副会长、海南省佛教协会会长、湖北省佛教协会名誉会长、深圳市佛教协会会长,担任深圳弘法寺、三亚南山寺、尼泊尔中华寺等多家寺院方丈,本焕学院院长、南海佛学院院长、柬中友协最高顾问、柬埔寨最高国家勋章获得者。由于其修行、弘法成就及对中外佛教文化交流所作出的杰出贡献,被泰国国王御赐“华僧大尊长”的荣誉称号。
Venerable Master Yin Shun is the Dharma successor of the late Venerable Master Benhuan and the 45th successor of the Linji School of Chinese Chan Buddhism. Besides being a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China, President of the Buddhist Association of Hainan Province, Honorary President of the Buddhist Association of Hubei, President of the Buddhist Association of Shenzhen, currently, he also serves as the abbot of a number of temples including Hongfa Temple in Shenzhen, Nanshan Temple in Sanya, the Chinese Temple in Nepal and President of the Benhuan Academy & Nanhai Academy of Buddhism. Venerable Master Yin Shun also holds the title of top adviser to the Cambodia-China Friendship Association and medal of honor winner of the Grand-Order-of-National-Merit of Cambodia. In view of his exemplary Buddhist practice, achievements in the promotion of Buddhist teachings and outstanding contributions to the cultural exchanges between Chinese and international Buddhist communities, the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej bestowed on him the title of "Supreme Chinese Monk".
印顺大和尚学修并重,深入经藏,精研教理,广学多闻,辩才无碍,尤其是作为禅宗传人,他于禅学多有心得,解行相应。印顺大和尚在精进修行以外,弘法不辍,经常通过演讲与著书等方式和众生结缘,撰写有多篇学术论文,受到教学两界的关注。他先后编辑著述出版了《弘法文库》、《中国汉传佛教丛林仪规》、《构建“人文佛教”的平台》、《虚云法师与鸡足山佛教》、《金刚般若波罗蜜经—现代文浅释》等书籍,受邀于凤凰卫视等众多讲坛,做了数十场公共演讲,在社会上产生了广泛而深入的影响。
Venerable Master Yin Shun is a champion of both Buddhist practice and learning. Having delved into the study of Buddhist scriptures and doctrines, he is extraordinarily knowledgeable and eloquent. Especially as a disciple of Chan Buddhism, his extensive and profound knowledge in the discipline informs his own practice and teachings. In addition to his own Buddhist practice, Venerable Master Yin Shun has sought to engage with the general public through speeches and books. He has also published a number of academic papers that have caught the attention of both the teachers and learners of Buddhism. Venerable Master Yin Shun has written and published a number of books including Hongfa Library, Rituals and Practices of Chinese Buddhism, Platform Construction of Humanistic Buddhism, Master Xu Yun and Mount Jizu Buddhism and An Explanation of the Vajracchedika Prajna paramita Sutra. He has also been invited to give a series of public lectures on such forums and platforms as Phoenix Television, which have produced profound and pervasive social impact.
印顺大和尚在寺院管理中始终坚持中国佛教传统,同时注重借鉴现代管理的有益经验,积极探索佛教寺院在现代社会中的生存与发展的理想模式。他制定了“以戒为师,以人为本,以法治寺,以修为主”的方针,确立了“以道风建设为中心,以慈善事业和佛教文化为两翼,构筑珠江三角洲乃至两岸四地面向世界的弘法利生平台”的发展方向,虔心致力于构建“人文佛教”。在他的管理下,弘法寺不断发展壮大,成为中国佛教的模范寺院,最具活力的都市丛林,以及连接两岸四地和海外的佛教文化友谊桥梁。
In the area of temple management, while always adhering to Chinese Buddhist traditions, Venerable Master Yin Shun has been keen to leverage the useful techniques of modern management practices and actively explore an ideal model for the survival and development of Buddhist monasteries in the modern age. He formulated the policy of "regarding the precepts as one's teacher, taking a people-oriented approach, managing the temple with rules and establishing the practice of Buddhism as the mainstay". He has committed himself to the development of "humanistic Buddhism", a vision that he hopes to realize through the establishment of a platform of Buddhist teaching, built around the practice of Buddhist ethics and on the spirit of philanthropy and Buddhist culture, that wields influence across the Pearl River Delta, both sides of the Taiwan Strait and even around the world. Under the care and custody of Venerable Master Yin Shun, Hongfa Temple has continued to grow, and evolved into an exemplar for Chinese Buddhism, a most dynamic urban Buddhist monastery and a bridge that connects the Buddhist communities from across the Taiwan Strait and the world over.
印顺大和尚重视佛教教育与传播,为培育僧才,续佛慧命,先后创办了本焕学院和南海佛学院。两个学院与北京大学、英国剑桥大学、斯里兰卡凯拉尼亚大学等国内外高等学府都建立了良好的合作关系。
Venerable Master Yin Shun regards Buddhist education and the promotion of Buddhism as a top priority. He founded the Benhuan Academy and Nanhai Academy of Buddhism with the conscious aim of cultivating Buddhist talent and preserving Buddhist teachings. The two academies have established strong cooperative relationships with Peking University, University of Cambridge, University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka and other institutions of higher learning at home and abroad.
印顺大和尚爱国爱教,积极响应“一带一路”倡议,大力传播中国佛教与文化。他多次出访东南亚诸国,积极在当地开展各项慈善活动,包括抗洪抗震救灾、捐资助学、援建医院、修复古迹等等。他在尼泊尔、斯里兰卡、柬埔寨领导开展的光明行活动,让数千当地盲人重见光明。他捐资修复尼泊尔世界文化遗产博达哈大佛塔,受到联合国教科文组织的高度评价。
Venerable Master Yin Shun's love for his country and Buddhism is evident. He has actively responded to the call of the Belt and Road Initiative and taken on the mission of promoting Chinese Buddhism and culture. Venerable Master Yin Shun has visited Southeast Asian countries on many occasions during which he actively engaged in philanthropic work in local communities including flood & disaster relief, donation to schools and the building of hospitals, restoration of historical relics, and etc. His "Return to Light" campaign in Nepal, Sri Lanka and Cambodia has helped thousands of locals regain vision. He has also received praise from UNESCO for his donations to the cause of restoring Nepal's Boudha Stupa - a UNESCO World Heritage.
从2016年至2021年,他创办并连续承办六届“南海佛教深圳圆桌会”,与20多个国家的佛教界领袖与宗教文化官员共同倡导各国互助互帮,以慈悲造福人民,以智慧化解纷争,以善行推进和平,并签署《南海佛教深圳宣言》,建立南海佛教年度对话机制等。从2015年至2022年,他连续承办了七届博鳌亚洲论坛“宗教领袖对话”分论坛,为加强国与国之间的深层次文化交流,促进民心相通,做出了积极的贡献,受到多国政府及宗教界的高度赞扬。
From 2016 to 2021, he founded and then hosted six South China Sea Buddhism Shenzhen Round-table in a row, which saw Buddhist leaders and religion & culture department officials from more than 20 nations come together to advocate mutual assistance and support, uplifting people through compassion, resolving conflicts with wisdom and promoting peace through good deeds. The Round-table also witnessed the signing of the South China Sea Buddhism Shenzhen Declaration and the establishment of an annual dialogue mechanism among others. From 2015 to 2022, Venerable Master Yin Shun hosted the "Religious Leaders Dialogue" during the Boao Forum for Asia seven years in a row. He has made positive contributions to strengthening in-depth cultural exchanges between countries and promoting people-to-people exchanges, for which Venerable Master Yin Shun has also received widespread praise from the governments and religious communities of a host of nations.
